Beyond the Prison Walls: Brewing Hope and Second Chances Through PJPS Ex Preso

October 20, 2026 | Second Day of Prison Awareness Week

Freedom is a gift, but beginning again is not always easy.

For Persons Restored of Liberty (PRLs), leaving prison does not mean leaving every struggle behind. The world outside offers new possibilities, but it can also bring uncertainty, fear, and the painful reality of being judged for a past they are trying to move beyond.

Finding work can be difficult. Rebuilding relationships takes time. Learning to trust oneself again requires courage. And sometimes, the hardest part of starting over is believing that others are willing to give you another chance.

This Prison Awareness Week, as we reflect on the lives of our brothers and sisters who have returned to the community after serving their sentence, we are invited to look beyond their past and recognize the dignity, dreams, and possibilities that remain within them.

Because a person’s story does not end at the prison gates.

Sometimes, a new beginning starts with something as simple as a cup of coffee.

More Than Coffee, A Journey of Restoration

Through its PRL CARE program, which stands for Companionship, Assistance, Reintegration, and Empowerment, the Philippine Jesuit Prison Service Foundation, Inc. (PJPS) continues to accompany Persons Restored of Liberty as they rebuild their lives and find their place in society.

One expression of this mission is PJPS Ex Preso, a coffee cart initiative that offers PRLs an opportunity to develop their skills, regain confidence, and experience the dignity of meaningful work.

But Ex Preso is more than a livelihood initiative.

Behind every cup of coffee is a person learning to begin again. Behind every order served is an opportunity to practice responsibility, build relationships, and rediscover the confidence that may have been weakened by years of hardship and the weight of social stigma.

As shared in the PJPS story, Ex Preso: Your Fresh Start, the initiative grew from a simple but profound realization: reintegration requires more than employment. It requires healing, formation, and a community willing to walk alongside those who are rebuilding their lives.

The coffee cart becomes a space where these things can happen. Through training, spiritual reflection, dialogue, and personal accompaniment, PRLs are given opportunities to grow not only as workers but also as individuals who can once again trust themselves and their future.

A Cup That Carries a Story

At first glance, Ex Preso may look like an ordinary coffee cart. Customers come to enjoy their favorite drinks, share conversations, or take a short break from their busy day.

Yet there is something extraordinary happening behind the counter.

Each barista brings a personal story of struggle, courage, and the desire to move forward. Each interaction offers a chance to be seen not simply as someone who has been incarcerated, but as a person who can serve, contribute, learn, and grow.

In a recent PJPS story about the Likhalaya Fair, Mark Domingo, a Person Restored of Liberty and an ex-preso barista, shared how the accompaniment he received through PJPS helped change his life. His journey reminds us that transformation is not something that happens overnight. It grows through trust, opportunities, and people who choose to believe in another person's capacity to change.

These moments reveal what Ex Preso truly represents. It is a community learning to recognize potential where others may see only a past. It is a reminder that a person's worth is not erased by mistakes, and that dignity can flourish when people are welcomed with respect rather than suspicion.

Restoring Dignity, One Opportunity at a Time

Reintegration is a journey that requires patience. It asks PRLs to face the challenges of rebuilding their lives while navigating the expectations and judgments of the wider community.

For this reason, the work of restoration cannot rest on the individual alone. Families, communities, employers, institutions, and people of goodwill all have a part to play.

A chance to work can help restore confidence. A welcoming conversation can ease the fear of rejection. A community that chooses compassion can help someone believe that belonging is still possible.

This is the heart of PJPS Ex Preso. The coffee cart is not simply about selling drinks or measuring success through business transactions. It is part of a formation journey in which PRLs are accompanied as they learn, grow, and prepare for life beyond incarceration.

Every cup served becomes an opportunity to demonstrate responsibility and competence. Every customer who chooses to engage with an open heart helps create a space where a person can be known for who they are becoming, rather than defined forever by who they once were.

And every expression of support helps affirm a simple but powerful truth: people can change, and they deserve opportunities to show it.

This Prison Awareness Week, Let Us Choose to See Beyond the Past

As we mark the second day of Prison Awareness Week, let us remember our brothers and sisters who have returned to society after serving their sentence. Let us pray for their healing, their families, their perseverance, and the courage they need to face each new day.

May we also examine the ways we respond to people whose pasts are different from our own. Do we leave room for growth? Do we recognize the possibility of transformation? Are we willing to offer the trust and encouragement that can help another person move forward?

Compassion does not mean ignoring the past. It means recognizing that accountability and restoration can exist together, and that justice must leave room for people to rebuild their lives with dignity.

Through PRL CARE and Ex Preso, PJPS continues to accompany PRLs in this journey. But this mission grows stronger when others choose to take part.

You can support the work of PJPS by sharing the stories of PRLs, supporting Ex Preso coffee cart engagements, contributing to the PRL CARE program, and encouraging communities to welcome people who are striving to begin again.

Every act of generosity helps sustain a mission that believes no one should be reduced to their worst mistake and no one should have to rebuild their life alone.

This October 20, let us remember that freedom is not merely the absence of prison walls. It is also the opportunity to live with dignity, to contribute to society, and to hope for a future shaped by new choices.

The next time you receive a cup of coffee from Ex Preso, remember the person behind it. Remember the courage it takes to begin again. Remember that your welcome, your trust, and your support can become part of someone else's story of transformation.

Together, let us brew hope, restore dignity, and build a society where second chances are met with compassion.

Support PJPS and walk with our brothers and sisters as they begin again.

Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam.
