From January 13 to 17, 2026, the Philippine Jesuit Prison Service Foundation, Inc. (PJPS) conducted a home visit and formation activity for our scholars in Dumaguete, led by Ms. Jesusa “Jel” Ramos, RSW, PJPS Scholarship Program Coordinator, and Ms. Angel “Gel” Allego, PJPS Donor and Partner Relations Associate.
The visit was part of PJPS’ continuing commitment to accompaniment, going beyond academic monitoring to truly understand the lives, families, and communities of our scholars. Through home visits and a scholars’ gathering, the team listened to stories of resilience, affirmed the scholars’ efforts, and reinforced the values and responsibilities that come with being a PJPS scholar.

A formation activity was also held, where scholars were reminded that the PJPS Scholarship Program is not only about financial assistance, but also about growth, discipline, and hope. It was a space for reflection, gratitude, and renewed commitment to pursue education despite difficult circumstances.

One of the homes we visited was in Bais. Three hours away from Dumaguete City, followed by another hour of walking by foot just to reach the scholar’s house.
The path was narrow, slippery, and dangerously close to a cliff. Every step required caution. Going there was difficult, even for us who were only visitors.
For our scholar, however, this is not a one-time journey. This is the road they take every day, walking this same path to reach school and walking it again to return home. This is the reality behind their pursuit of education: waking up early, walking long distances, navigating unsafe terrain, and still showing up to class with the hope of a better future.

During the visit, the team also had a courtesy meeting with Rev. Fr. Matias D. Rendon, Jr., Director of the Commission on Prison Pastoral Care, who shared about their work with four jails in Dumaguete and expressed openness to future partnerships.

Our PJPS scholars expressed heartfelt gratitude for the PJPS Scholarship Program. Not only for the financial assistance that helps support their education and daily needs, but also for the formation sessions we hold every month, which guide, inspire, and strengthen them to grow both academically and personally.
Standing there, we were reminded that access to education is not equal, and that for some, learning requires extraordinary courage.
Because of your generosity and support, PJPS is able to walk alongside scholars like this. Meeting them where they are, understanding their realities, and helping them continue despite the odds. Together, we help rebuild lives, rekindle hope, and restore dignity—one long walk, one story, one scholar at a time.
Maraming salamat po for believing in second chances and walking this journey with us.
Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam!
