Annual Visitation of the Father Provincial: Renewing Our Mission Through Presence, Listening, and Hope

There are moments in every mission that remind us why we continue to serve. They are not always marked by grand celebrations or extraordinary events. Sometimes, they are found in shared conversations, quiet moments of prayer, and the reassuring presence of people who walk with us in faith. On July 28 and 29, 2026, the Philippine Jesuit Prison Service was deeply blessed by the annual visitation of Fr. Xavier L. Olin, SJ, Father Provincial of the Philippine Province of the Society of Jesus. His visit became more than a tradition. It was a meaningful encounter that strengthened our shared commitment to accompany persons deprived of liberty with compassion, dignity, and hope. The first day of the visitation began at the Correctional Institution for Women, where Fr. Xavier celebrated the Holy Mass with the women entrusted to our care. Within the walls of the institution, the Eucharist became a powerful reminder that God's love reaches every person and that no life is ever beyond redemption. Every prayer offered and every smile shared reflected the hope that continues to grow even in places where many see only confinement. Following the Mass, Fr. Xavier paid a courtesy visit to C SSUPT Daisy S. Castillote, Superintendent of the Correctional Institution for Women. Their conversation reflected the importance of collaboration between correctional institutions and mission partners who share the desire to uphold the dignity and humanity of every person. The journey then continued to the Philippine Jesuit Prison Service office, where Fr. Xavier shared lunch with the staff and volunteers. Around one table, stories of service, challenges, laughter, and gratitude came together. These simple moments of fellowship reminded everyone that mission is never carried alone. It flourishes in community. During the afternoon, Fr. Xavier met with the PJPS staff for the annual conversation. It was a sacred space where each member shared personal experiences, stories from the field, and reflections on how the organization continues to grow through Ignatian spirituality. The conversation also celebrated the guidance of the Jesuit priests who accompany the ministry and the leadership of the new lay Executive Director as PJPS continues to respond faithfully to the needs of those on the margins. The second day brought Fr. Xavier to the office of C SSUPT Gary A. Garcia, Superintendent of the New Bilibid Prison. The visit highlighted the enduring partnership between correctional leadership and those committed to restorative justice and compassionate service. Later that morning, Fr. Xavier celebrated the Holy Mass at the Reception and Diagnostic Center. For many newly admitted persons deprived of liberty, this celebration offered reassurance that even at the beginning of a difficult journey, hope remains present. It echoed the very heart of the PJPS mission to accompany people where they are and to remind them that every new beginning carries the possibility of transformation. The visitation concluded with an afternoon dialogue with the PJPS Board of Trustees and volunteers. Together, they reflected on the continuing mission of the organization, the challenges that lie ahead, and the many opportunities to deepen service rooted in faith, discernment, and solidarity. Throughout these two days, one message became clear. Presence matters. Listening matters. Walking with one another matters. The annual visitation was not simply about reviewing programs or discussing organizational direction. It was about strengthening relationships, renewing our shared purpose, and remembering that every act of accompaniment reflects Christ's compassion. As we continue our mission, we remain grateful for the trust of our partners, volunteers, benefactors, and everyone who believes in the transformative power of mercy and justice.
