Hope in Sight: Renewed Vision for PDLs at NBP Maximum Security Camp

On November 5, 2024, the Philippine Jesuit Prison Service Foundation, Inc. (PJPS) and mission partners returned to the New Bilibid Prison Maximum Security Camp for a continuation of the Optical Mission, an initiative transforming lives through the gift of sight. This is more than just a medical intervention; it’s a bridge to new opportunities, connections, and hope for men who have long been in need of eye care. Collaborating with the Mabuhay Deseret Foundation, Charity Vision, Success and Money, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Ephpheta Foundation, and the Bureau of Corrections - NBP, PJPS successfully provided: 78 cataract surgeries 7 pterygium surgeries 152 pairs of prescription eyeglasses These services go beyond medical relief, restoring vision and opening doors for individuals like Lolo Nestor, an ALS-Elementary student, who remarked, “Malaking tulong na muli na akong makakita nang malinaw para sa aking pag-aaral. Kahit matanda na ako, para paglaya ko, magamit ko ang mga natutuhan ko rito sa loob.” For a diabetic PDL who hadn’t seen clearly since 2015, receiving his eyeglasses brought joy and renewed optimism: “Ang saya-saya ko. Kitang-kita ko na kayo. Maraming Salamat dahil sa inyo luminaw na ang mata ko. Salamat sa malasakit at pag bisita.” Adding a touch of emotional support, our partners provided each PDL with a letter of hope. One PDL shared how much this meant to him after receiving his eyeglasses: “Maraming salamat po brothers and sisters sa inyong sulat at ibinigay niyong pag-asa sa akin.” The continuation of this mission reflects the strength of collaboration and compassion. Through the tireless efforts of our mission partners, PJPS remains committed to restoring not just sight, but a sense of dignity, purpose, and hope to the men at NBP.
