June 27, 2026 marked another meaningful chapter in the mission of the Philippine Jesuit Prison Service Foundation, Inc. as aspiring volunteers stepped inside the Medium Prison Camp for Kwentuhang Bilibid: Listening, Learning, and Walking Together.

For many, it was their first encounter with the realities behind prison walls. For others, it became an affirmation of a calling that had quietly been growing in their hearts. What united everyone was a willingness to listen, to learn, and to journey with people whose stories are often unheard.
The activity gathered around 120 Persons Deprived of Liberty who are currently enrolled in various educational programs, including the ALS Basic Literacy Program, ALS Elementary, Muntinlupa National High School Extension, University of Perpetual Help System DALTA Extension, Vocational Training School, and the Children in Conflict with the Law program.

Participants were warmly welcomed by CTSO1 Anne Dela Peña and CO3 Dominguito Martinez of the Bureau of Corrections. Their presence reflected a shared commitment to rehabilitation, education, restorative justice, and the belief that every person deserves opportunities to grow and begin again.
Kwentuhang Bilibid is more than an immersion activity. It is an invitation to encounter people beyond labels and beyond assumptions. It reminds us that every individual carries a story that deserves to be heard with compassion and respect.

Throughout the conversations, aspiring volunteers sat alongside Persons Deprived of Liberty, Children in Conflict with the Law, and seasoned PJPS volunteers. They shared stories, reflected on life's challenges, and discovered how genuine accompaniment begins not with answers but with presence.
Prison ministry is often misunderstood as an effort to rescue others. Yet the experience revealed a deeper truth. It is not about saving people. It is about recognizing the God-given dignity that already exists within every person. It is about listening without judgment, offering hope without conditions, and walking together toward healing, accountability, restoration, and reintegration.

One aspiring volunteer beautifully captured the experience through these heartfelt words:

These words remind us that transformation happens on both sides of every encounter. As volunteers accompany those affected by incarceration, they, too, are changed. Hearts are softened. Perspectives are renewed. Callings become clearer.
Every conversation inside prison walls becomes a quiet reminder that hope is never imprisoned. Human dignity cannot be erased by past mistakes. Compassion has the power to restore relationships. Love continues to find its way into places where many believe it no longer exists.
At PJPS, we believe that accompaniment is one of the greatest gifts we can offer. Every conversation, every shared meal, every listening heart becomes a step toward healing, reintegration, and renewed hope.

This meaningful gathering was made even more possible through the generosity of the Loaves and Fish Foundation, whose sponsorship of the participants' meals reflected the spirit of sharing and solidarity that nourished both body and soul.
As we continue our mission of walking with persons affected by incarceration, we invite you to become part of this journey.
Your generosity allows us to continue creating spaces where dignity is restored, hope is renewed, and lives are transformed through compassionate accompaniment.
Together, we can continue listening.
Together, we can continue learning.
Together, we can continue walking beside those who need hope the most.
Thank you for walking this journey with us. Together, we continue to discover that true prison ministry begins by listening with the heart and believing that every person is worthy of hope.
