Session 2: Liwanag at Anino

Finding Hope Through Shared Stories

There is something deeply healing about being heard.

On June 27, 2026, forty Persons Deprived of Liberty gathered at Our Lady of Grace Chapel inside the New Bilibid Prison Reception and Diagnostic Center for the second session of Bagito: Bagong Landas entitled Liwanag at Anino. It was a space where courage quietly unfolded, one story at a time.

The session invited participants to reflect on their Liwanag, the moments of goodness, hope, and strength they have experienced inside prison, and their Anino, the painful realities, struggles, and challenges they continue to face. They were encouraged to write these experiences and present them before their fellow participants.

This activity was never meant to reopen wounds. Instead, it became an opportunity for every participant to discover a powerful truth. No one carries their burdens alone.

As each person shared, silent nods of understanding filled the room. Stories that had long been hidden found compassionate listeners. Concerns that were once carried in isolation became shared experiences. In those moments, vulnerability became a source of strength, reminding everyone that healing often begins when we realize that others understand our journey.

The participants also reflected on practical ways to move forward. They identified the people, habits, and opportunities already helping them grow inside the prison community. They explored new practices they could begin to cultivate and honestly acknowledged the behaviors they needed to leave behind in order to live with greater freedom, peace, and safety.

What stood out most during the session was not only the depth of the conversations but also the growing trust between the participants and the volunteers. Compared to the previous gathering, many became more open, allowing themselves to share not only their experiences but also the softer parts of themselves. It was a beautiful reminder that authentic presence creates spaces where hope can quietly take root.

The day concluded with a shared meal generously provided by the Loaves and Fish Foundation, whose continuing support nourishes not only the bodies of our participants but also this mission of accompaniment and restoration.

Every session reminds us that transformation is rarely instant. It happens through listening, compassion, trust, and the unwavering belief that every person possesses an inherent dignity that no circumstance can erase.

At the Philippine Jesuit Prison Service Foundation, Inc., we continue walking alongside our brothers and sisters behind bars because every story deserves to be heard, every life deserves another chance, and every heart carries the possibility of renewal.

Together, we become instruments of hope.

Your generosity allows us to continue providing formation sessions, accompaniment, meals, and opportunities that help restore dignity and inspire transformation. Every act of kindness becomes part of someone's journey toward a new beginning.
